MSG (Ret.) Randal Underhill was born in Evansville, Indiana in July 1968.  He enlisted in the Indiana Army National Guard as an 11 B, Infantryman in November 1987 and completed Infantry One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, GA in April of 1988. Leaving the National Guard for active duty,  he entered the active Army at Fort Campbell, Kentucky as a Private in September 1990 on his first of three tours at the post.

Over the course of his 24 years of service, MSG Underhill  served more than 17 years in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He held numerous positions such as rifleman, machine gunner, Scout Team Leader, Squad Leader, Pathfinder Team Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Inspector General NCO and First Sergeant in his assignments within the Division.  He served in 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 187th Infantry Regiment, Pathfinder Co (ABN), 6th Battalion, 101st Aviation and the 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry where he served nearly 53 months as a First Sergeant. He has the honor of being a Distinguished Member of the 187th Infantry Regiment and was awarded the Order of St. Maurice.

In 1990 MSG Underhill deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.  He would also later  deploy twice to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and three times to  Operation Iraqi Freedom.

MSG Underhill’s other assignments included the Republic of Korea, where he served as an Assistant Team Leader for the Long Range Surveillance Detachment (ABN), 102nd Military Intelligence Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Hovey and the C Co. 1-46th Infantry, 1st Armored Training Brigade, Fort Knox, KY as a Drill Sergeant. MSG Underhill’s  final assignment prior to retirement  was as the Senior Military Instructor  for Austin Peay State University’s  Army Reserve Officer Training Course in Clarksville, TN.

MSG Underhill’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, with four oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation medal with four oak leaf clusters and the Army Achievement Medal with seven oak leaf clusters. He is also a recipient of the Combat Infantryman Badge, Second Award, the Combat Action Badge, Expert Infantryman badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Drill Sergeant Identification Badge and  the Ranger Tab.

MSG Underhill resides in Clarksville Tennessee with his wife Kristine who is a teacher in the Fort Campbell School System.  They have three children,  daughters Stephanie and Samantha and son, Michael.
